Federal Employees Awaiting Disciplinary Action Cost $3.1B

During the fiscal years 2011 through to 2013, the cost of keeping federal employees on administrative leave whilst they awaited disciplinary action for work-placed malpractice totaled $3.1 billion. At the end of last month, Katherine Archuleta, Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), reported that the agency would soon be seeking to finally implement the recommendations of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) regarding this issue.

According to the GAO, during the above period, 4,000 federal employees were on administrative leave for 3 months to a year, with hundreds waiting on their respective disciplinary action for 1 to 3 years.
